Napoli are currently contemplating whether to return for Alejandro Garnacho after having their opening £40 million bid rebuffed by Manchester United.

According to reports coming out of Italy, the Serie A leaders will submit an improved proposal in hopes of twisting Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arm into facilitating the transfer. One outlet, Il Mattino (relayed by AreaNapoli via Sport Witness), has gone as far as to claim that the youngster has made a ‘promise’ to the Napoli board that he wants the move.

While that may well be the case, it’s out of Garnacho’s hands – unless he hands in a transfer request, of course. United are under no pressure to sanction his exit after tying him down to a long-term deal in 2023, which sees him under contract until 2028.

The club value their academy graduate in the region of £60m following his stellar breakthrough into the first team in 2022/2023.

Last night, Garnacho made his second successive start after being made to settle for off-the-bench cameos in six games, as well as being dropped entirely from Ruben Amorim’s Manchester derby squad last month.

He has, however, got his head down and worked to be restored to the team, it must be said. The 20-year-old repaid Amorim’s faith against Arsenal by assisting Bruno Fernandes with a spectacular pass for the opening goal – although he struggled to make a lasting impact during Thursday’s tumultuous clash with Southampton.

Given that it’s widely expected Marcus Rashford will depart before the February 3 deadline, a replacement for Garnacho would have to be lined up if Napoli meet United’s demands. With that in mind, any prospective deal has to be completed sooner rather than later to ensure INEOS can begin pursuing his successor.
