Inter face total collapse as Milan demolish treble dreams with three unanswered goals to send Rossonerri to Coppa Italia finals

A total state of oblivion and perplexity for coach Simone Inzaghi’s side as Inter get pummelled in devastating fashion, conceding three unanswered goals against Milan, allowing the Rossonerri to qualify for the Coppa Italia finals 4-1 on aggregate and squander the Nerazzurri’s aspirations of a treble.

It was a convincing, dominant start to the first half for the former Lazio coach’s side as they dictated the play in the midfield through the brilliant passes of Nicolo Barella and Kristjan Asllani and the triangular movements aligned with Inzaghi’s philosophy of play.

Further, Inter were quite intact defensively, with German international Yann Aurel Bisseck doing a remarkable job containing Rafael Leao and constantly breaking the play, as well as Stefan De Vrij marshalling the back three.

However, Inter’s downfall was caused by a seemingly familiar problem, which was their inability to finish chances in the final third.

From Mehdi Taremi completely throwing away an opportunity when on the counter in a three-on-two situation, to Lautaro failing to hit the net on the volley within the box in courtesy of a cushioned header from the former Porto forward, Inter were far from clinical despite demonstrating great promise after a heart-break 1-0 defeat at the Stadio Dall’Arra over the weekend against Bologna.

On the other hand, Milan were stark opposite offensively, showing their ability to be lethal within the attacking zone, as they silenced the San Siro with their first shot on target,  Serbian forward Luka Jovic scoring a soaring header followed by a brilliant delivery from Alex Jimenez.

Just when many thought Inter would be able shake off their slight drift of concentration when having conceded the goal and find a way to come back into the fixture in similar fashion to the previous leg, it just simply got far more worse for the Beneamata.

The former Fiorentina and Benfica marksman found the back of the net shortly after the start of the second half in quite a scrappy fashion off multiple deflections form a Rossonerri corner delivery, affirming Milan coach Sergio Conceicao’s decision to start Jovic over Tammy Abraham as he bagged a brace, stretching his fine run of form to five goals in his last five appearances across all competitions.

Hence, suffering a two goal deficit with 40 minutes of play remaining forced Inzaghi to make a flurry of substitutions, as the Italian boss made four tactical alterations at once.

Despite a few occasions on goal, Inter lacked energy and desire, looking completely switched off and unable to bounce back, struggling to cope with the Rossonerri’s slick passing through the middle.

In the final stages of the game, it was seamless team movement where Dutchman Tijjani Reijnders latched onto the ball from a perfect pass by Rafael Leao, gliding through the Nerazzurri back-line in superb-fashion and tucking the ball past Josep Martinez to secure Milan’s spot in Coppa Italia finals in Rome, keeping their aspirations of European football alive.

With Inter having lost two matches in a row for the first time this season across all competitions, failing to win a single Milan derby this season out five after having won six consecutive derbies prior, two draws and three losses, and having crumbled to a Milan side who sit in ninth place and looked completely disorganized in their three-back structure over the weekend against Atalanta, serious reflections and analyses are required from Simone Inzaghi.

The Nerazzurri must regroup and dig-deep as they prepare to face a superb Roma side next weekend in their hopes of keeping up with the pace of Napoli as both Serie A giants chase the scudetto, with the two clubs possessing 71 points a piece with five matches remaining.
