Inter star center-back Alessandro Bastoni sustained a worrying knee injury during Saturday’s Sere A away match against Parma. Simone Inzaghi had to take his trusted ally off at halftime due to an alleged injury scare.
After receiving a red card in a 2-1 home win against Udinese last weekend, Inzaghi had to watch the game from the stands, serving a one-game touchline ban on his 49th birthday. As if that wasn’t worrying enough, Inter stalwart Bastoni had to come off early on the eve of a mouth-watering Champions League quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich.
Indeed, Inter head to Germany to take on the runaway Bundesliga leaders next Tuesday in the first leg of this European blockbuster. Bastoni’s potential absence would be a massive blow for the Nerazzurri, given the 25-year-old’s significance in the dressing room and scintillating form.
On top of that, Inter will be without star wingback Denzel Dumfries, whose muscle injury has proved more serious than expected. The Dutchman will reportedly stay in the treatment room for at least three more weeks, meaning he could miss both legs against Vincent Kompany’s side.
However, there’s a glimmer of light amid this severe injury crisis, with Inter captain Lautaro Martinez on the verge of recovery. The Argentine forward missed last weekend’s game against Udinese and a draw against Milan in midweek Coppa Italia action through a hamstring injury.
Martinez was in the starting line-up today, but Inzaghi subbed him off midway through the second half as a precautionary measure.
