Lazio now have a clear path ahead of them in their attempts to acquire the rights to renovate the Stadio Flaminio.
The Biancocelesti currently share the Stadio Olimpico with their crosstown rivals, Roma, but they intend to have their own stadium, which could also serve as a sporting and social hub for their supporters.
Claudio Lotito and Co. identified the currently defunct Stadio Flaminio as the ideal location, and have recently revealed their plans to build a state-of-the-art stadium with a seating capacity between 40,000 and 50,000.
However, Lazio had to overcome competition from Roma Nuoto who launched a project aimed at building a sporting venue in the same location. This project was launched prior to Lazio’s, so it had reached a more advanced stage in the long bureaucratic process synanymous with Italian affairs.
But according to La Lazio Siamo Noi, the municipality council of Rome has unanimously decided to turn down the Roma Nuoto project. The council deemed it ill-suited for the venue’s purpose, which is hosting domestic and international events within a large stadium.
The doomed project sought to reduce the stadium capacity from 42,000 to just 7,500, which would have diminished the value of the stadium according to the council.
With Roma Nuoto now out of the way, Lazio are now expected to gain the rights to renovate the stadium and make it their own ground. The mayor of Rome had reportedly expressed a favorable opinion on the pre-feasibility study presented by the club, describing the project as ‘beautiful’.
Lazio will be looking to finalise the bureaucratic procedures by 2026 and would then aim to finish the renovation work by the summer of 2029.
