Lazio are expected to extend their collaboration with Matias Vecino beyond the current campaign, even though they’re aiming to inject fresh blood into their ranks.
The Uruguayan has been plying his trade in Serie A since 2013, representing Fiorentina, Cagliari, Empoli and Inter Milan before joining the Biancocelesti on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. The experienced midfielder has been an important figure at the club ever since, and has recently returned from a long injury layoff to put himself at Marco Baroni’s disposal.
According to Il Messaggero (via Calciomercato), Lazio are still looking to rejuvenate their squad, continuing the project started last summer. Nevertheless, the management would like to keep Vecino as one of the few veterans at the club. Hence, club president Claudio Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabaini are looking to tie the player down with a new contract.
The 33-year-old is currently running on an expiring deal, but his agent, Alessandro Lucci, is expected to hold a meeting with the club directors in the coming days to discuss all the details of the renewal.
The source believes the two parties could reach an agreement rather rapidly, as they both intend to prolong their collaboration. Vecino and his family are said to be happy in Rome, and have no immediate plans to leave the Eternal City.
Hence, the report claims the midfielder will be the next player to sign a new Lazio contract, while fellow veteran Pedro could follow suit afterwards.
