One of the top goalscorers in Ligue 1 is looking to switch allegiances on the international stage.

Mason Greenwood has netted 15 times for Olympique de Marseille in the league this season; only Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé (18) has scored more.

The English-born striker, who came through at the Manchester United academy and previously featured for their senior squad, has made a request to play for the Jamaican national team, the country where his parents grew up.

The Bradford-born striker has only picked up one cap for the England national team at the senior level and that was back in September 2020. He has not played for the Three Lions since allegations of attempted rape were levelled against him.

Greenwood had been charged in 2022 with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. In 2023, these charges were dropped after the CPS revealed that key witnesses had withdrawn their cooperation and new material had come to light. Greenwood has denied the allegations.

At Marseille, the Englishman has had a strong season and is a big reason why Marseille find themselves second in the table and well-positioned to return to the UEFA Champions League.

The Reggae Boyz are managed by a man familiar with Greenwood in the form of Steve McClaren who served as an assistant to Erik ten Hag with Man United from May 2022 until July of last year.

McClaren had previously served as England manager following the 2006 FIFA World Cup but was sacked after the Three Lions failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

In December, Greenwood was named the Ligue 1 Player of the Month at OM. Greenwood joined Marseille on a five-year contract last summer.
