Valencia CF returned to Copa Del Rey action after having knocked out Parla Escuela in the opening round, following a 2-1 away loss to RCD Mallorca in LaLiga and aiming to advance to the next round.
Valencia CF came out looking to take the game to the opposition right from the off, in an end-to-end meeting in the early goings of the tie. Valencia CF continued to dictate the tempo and possession, enjoying attacking forays into the opposition box. The first Valencia CF chance fell to Fran Pérez, who tried his luck after bursting past his marker and getting his shot away.
Martín Tejón enjoyed another effort on goal after a fine solo run, but his effort fizzed past the post under the midway mark of the first half. The half saw a sloppy and cagey spell over the half-hour mark, with chances few and far between for either side at the Nuevo Luchán. The first half finished goalless, with all to play for in the second half at Luchán.
Rubén Baraja made half-time substitutions, with Martín Tejón and Christhian Mosquera making way for Sergi Canós and Yarek Gasiorowski. Shortly after, Valencia CF youngster Iker Córdoba got on the end of a pinpoint Pepelu delivery, which he nodded home with a towering header past the opposition keeper three minutes into the second half to give Valencia CF the lead.
Germán Valera rattled the crossbar with a powerful drive. Moments later, Dani Gómez capitalized on an opposition let-off at the back to slam the ball past the keeper, doubling their lead. Alas, Gabriel Palmás pulled one back for the hosts, pouncing on a Valencia CF mix-up at the back and poking the ball beyond Stole Dimitrievski with twenty minutes plus stoppage time left to play in the tie.
Rafa Mir sealed the win and booked Valencia CF’s ticket for the next round after dashing down the flank and rifling the ball across the goalkeeper on the stroke of full-time to make it 1-3 for Valencia CF.
Valencia CF’s attentions now turn to LaLiga’s all-important home game against Rayo Vallecano Madrileño at 6:30 pm at Mestalla on Matchday 16 of LaLiga EA Sports.
