Inter Miami is completing the squad for the 2025 season. Maxi Falcón became one of the big ones in the market for Inter Miami, as the center-back from Uruguay became historic at Colo-Colo, and arrives to MLS being already a veteran.
With a four-year contract and an option to extend until 2029, Falcón comes to Inter Miami with experience and a winning history. Having played for Rentistas and Colo-Colo, the defender has won six titles and played 24 matches in the Copa Libertadores, South America's most prestigious club tournament.
However, transitioning to American soccer is not simple. Historically, some South American players have struggled to adapt to the pace of the game in the United States. The Uruguayan will need to quickly prove that he can be a reliable presence in the defensive sector.
Falcón's arrival answers to a clear need that Inter Miami had: defensive solidity. After the departures of Sergii Kryvtsov and Nicolás Freire, the team needed a reinforcement in the backline. Now, the Uruguayan will join players like Tomás Avilés and David Martínez to complete the backline for the team.
But the question mark for Inter Miami is their defense. Despite the dominance in the regular season and winning the Supporters' Shield with 74 points, the team suffered an early playoff elimination against Atlanta United, showing weaknesses in decisive moments.
The big question to be answered by many is how much Falcón will raise the level of defense or if he is just maintaining the status quo. Now in the hands of Javier Mascherano, Inter Miami is going to look at the balance that must come in from the mighty attack with somewhat more consistent defense.
The first words of Falcón as a club player made his goal very clear: "My goal is to give my all to help the club and my new teammates succeed and win titles." A commitment that could be important for a team that wants to consolidate itself among the top candidates in MLS.
The coming season is going to be pivotal for Inter Miami. Coming off a stellar regular season in 2024, the onus will be on the team to parlay it into playoff success. The club's first official match of 2025 will come on February 18 against Sporting Kansas City in the Concacaf Champions Cup. In MLS, their journey begins on February 22 against New York City FC.
If Falcón can manage quick adaptation with solidity for the team, Inter Miami could be sealed as one of the favorites to win the title.
