Sergio Conceicao’s job at Milan is under imminent threat after back-to-back defeats in Serie A substantially derailed their top-four chances. According to La Repubblica via Calciomercato, the former Porto boss has become an ‘isolated’ figure at the San Siro amid a battle for supremacy within the club’s hierarchy.
With Zlatan Ibrahimovic pushing for a more prominent role, there’s a division at Milan, with tensions growing amongst the men in command. Poor results only heighten the pressure, with the Rossoneri already out of the Champions League despite investing heavily in the squad in the last two transfer windows.
A stomach-wrenching 2-1 defeat at Bologna on Thursday added insult to injury, leaving Conceicao on the precipice of a premature farewell. Despite leading Milan to a first piece of silverware in three years, courtesy of a Supercoppa Italiana triumph in January, the 50-year-old’s job is on thin ice.
However, Milan shouldn’t sack Conceicao until the summer. Yet, he was all alone at the Milanello the day after a Renato Dall’Ara heartbreak. Indeed, he stayed behind on the training ground after the players left, testifying to an unhealthy atmosphere at the club, highlighted by the uncertain futures of star performers Rafael Leao and Theo Hernandez.
The situation is far from ideal ahead of Sunday’s must-win home clash against Lazio. Anything other than victory would be catastrophic as Milan lag eight points behind fourth-placed Juventus. Furthermore, four points separate them from sixth-placed Fiorentina, meaning they could fail to qualify for European football altogether.
