In the leadup to Ismael Bennacer’s return, many stated that he would be like a new signing for AC Milan in January. This has not been the case, though.
Bennacer’s biggest asset is and has always been, how intelligent he is. In midfield, he was often ahead of the game, and he saw it in a slightly different way. The difference is that his body cannot keep up with it at current.
After the injuries that the Algerian has had to sustain in the past few years, it has taken a toll, and now he looks like a different player. Unfortunately, he is not the player that was hoped for by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and others, and this leaves Milan short.
Milan News states that Bennacer’s condition is still not at the level required, and he is not 100% ready yet. For this reason, he cannot be relied upon, and the Rossoneri now need to invest in reliability with Tijjani Reijnders and Youssouf Fofana often working overtime.
When he returns, the midfielder can be a ‘luxury replacement’ or even an extra solution, but his game time so far has shown ‘one thing’ – he is not yet ready for a regular role in the team.
