It was back in December 2023, during a La Liga game against Villarreal that Real Madrid centre-back David Alaba suffered an ACL injury, 35 minutes into the contest.

It has been a hard road for the veteran Austrian from that point on, with his recovery progressing slower than anticipated and there being complications and setbacks in between.

However, having battled through it all, Alaba is back in group training with Real Madrid for a few weeks now and after more than a year out, is edging closer to a comeback on the pitch.

Alaba could be back vs Las Palmas

Indeed, according to journalist Jose Luis Sanchez on El Chiringuito, David Alaba could be back in action for Real Madrid this weekend when they take on Las Palmas on Sunday.

The veteran defender travelled to Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup but was not deemed ready for a return while he was also excluded from last night’s Copa del Rey knockout clash against Celta Vigo.

But the plan has always been for Alaba to get minutes from the second half of January and it could start this weekend with the home game against Las Palmas.

As per the report, Alaba will test himself in a ‘mini-match’ with the youth players in training today, following which a call on his involvement on Sunday will be made.

Alaba’s return would come as a timely boost for Real Madrid, who confirmed earlier today that Eduardo Camavinga is out with a hamstring injury.

The former Bayern Munich star’s availability means that Carlo Ancelotti can move Aurelien Tchouameni into his natural position in midfield and not continue using him at centre-back.
