David Prutton believes Tottenham's Archie Gray signing was a big £40m move and disapproves Southampton's plan to successfully fetch £100m for Tyler Dibling.
This might surprise you but now, even people who don’t watch football know about Southampton’s Tyler Dibling transfer saga. Such has been the Saints' relentless efforts to push up a massive Dibling move.
While in winter, the player's form attracted suitors naturally, Southampton has left no stone unturned in their efforts even when he is struggling now.
Now, undoubtedly, this has only been possible due to the Saints' persistent efforts in the summer window buildup, but none has worked better than their £100m surprise. And its result? It hasn’t just shaken the footballing galaxy but has even divided Southampton’s own fanbase.
Interestingly, while the majority fraction of the St. Mary's faithful support the decision, the call hasn't sat well with some others.
Notably, an honourable mention representing the second group is former Saints hero and now pundit David Prutton. Recently, while speaking to Football League World, Prutton gave an analogy of Tottenham's talent purchase Archie Gray to explain why Southampton's ask makes limited sense.
In his words: "We saw Archie Gray go for £40m off the back of a near ever-present season in the Championship and an appearance in the play-off final. Obviously, Dibling's doing it at a high level right now, but £100m, that's one hell of a punt on potential, isn't it?"
Now, definitely, this goes against Southampton's Dibling narrative, but no one can deny Prutton's words as being unwise. While Dibling has been a sensation this season, demanding more than double what Tottenham paid for a similar teen breakthrough Archie Gray, feels unnatural.
But again, ultimately, Southampton's Dibling pitch isn't just Premier League specific, it's to the whole of Europe. Who knows, maybe a financial giant still takes off Dibling, paying this hefty fee to the Saints.
