Inter’s season is falling apart with a third consecutive defeat in all competition, as Matias Soulé gave Roma all three points at San Siro.

The Nerazzurri had a devastating week, losing at Bologna to be caught at the top of the table by Napoli, then crashing out of the Coppa Italia semi-final with a 3-0 defeat to Milan on Wednesday. Alessandro Bastoni and Henrikh Mkhitaryan sat out bans, with Marcus Thuram on the treatment table. Paulo Dybala, Saul Abdulhamid and Victor Nelsson missed out for the Giallorossi, who were on a 17-match unbeaten Serie A run, but surprised with Eldor Shomurodov and Artem Dovbyk together.

Davide Frattesi had the ball in the net against his former club after six minutes, but Carlos Augusto was offside before pulling back the assist.

Benjamin Pavard landed awkwardly on his ankle and he hobbled off in the opening 14 minutes, making way for Yann Bisseck.

Mile Svilar came rushing out to clear from Hakan Calhanoglu, but Roma took the lead after two almost identical moves in the space of a few minutes.

Both times, Matias Soulé dribbled down the right and pulled back to the edge of the box, but while Manu Kone blasted off target, Lorenzo Pellegrini’s attempt was deflected into the Argentine’s path for an angled drive.

There was almost a second soon after, Bryan Cristante shinning the finish on Pellegrini’s cross from the right, then Carlos Augusto made a decisive block to prevent Shomurodov tapping in the Angelino roll across at the back post.

Marko Arnautovic attempted an acrobatic scissor-kick volley and couldn’t make contact with the Matteo Darmian cross, while Tommaso Baldanzi tested Yann Sommer and Soulé curled off target.

Denzel Dumfries made his Inter comeback from over a month out with injury and immediately his header was tricky for Svilar, while Hakan Calhanoglu drilled just wide.

Nicolò Barella got himself into a great position from the Lautaro Martinez lay-off, only to flash his finish across the face of goal from seven yards.

Roma wasted two golden opportunities to extend their advantage at San Siro in quick succession, as first Niccolò Pisilli shinned the finish from 12 yards, then Dovbyk’s first touch was poor on the Angelino counter-attack, giving Francesco Acerbi the chance to make a decisive block.

Yann Bisseck had penalty appeals waved away for a tussle with Evan N’Dicka at the back post in the final minute.
