Valentin Rongier (30) has rallied his Olympique de Marseille teammates after they fell to a 3-0 defeat to AS Monaco on Saturday evening.
Speaking at the microphone of Téléfoot, the former Marseille captain revealed his frustration with the result, “Obviously disappointed, obviously angry, because once again it was an opportunity to beat a direct opponent [for Champions League qualification] today.”
The loss sends Marseille back down to third after they briefly returned to the runners-up spot with last weekend’s victory over Toulouse FC. However, Rongier was keen to not let the club’s focus on securing automatic qualification to the Champions League wander. “We still have our destiny in our hands,” the midfielder stated.
Marseille only have five more games remaining in the season. The club will be hopeful that they can find a way to turn around a run of form that has seen the team lose five of their last seven games.
A two-point buffer exists between Marseille and Lille OSC and RC Strasbourg Alsace in fourth and fifth, respectively; that buffer could be reduced to a single point if rivals Olympique Lyonnais defeat AJ Auxerre tonight.
