Tributes have poured in for the ex-striker, who scored some memorable goals for his country - including against England
Former LaLiga and Montenegro star Andrija Delibašić has died at the age of 43.
A statement from the Football Association of Montenegro (FSCG) confirmed on Wednesday that Delibašić had passed away after a long battle with serious illness.
Forward Delibašić earned 21 senior international caps for Montenegro between 2009 and 2013, scoring six goals including a shock last-gasp equalising header at home to England in Podgorica in October 2011 that saw his country qualify for the Euro 2012 play-offs.
In October 2009, he came off the bench to net the winner on his debut in a 2-1 home victory over Georgia in World Cup qualifying - Montenegro’s first competitive win since independence from Serbia in 2006.
At club level, Delibašić began his career with Partizan Belgrade - scoring their first-ever goal in the Champions League - and also played in Spain with Real Mallorca, Hercules and Rayo Vallecano, spending time on loan at Real Sociedad as well as in Portugal with Benfica, Braga and Beira-Mar and in Greece with AEK Athens.
He also had a brief stint in Thailand with Ratchaburi and finished his playing career in Montenegro with Sutjeska in 2015.
After retiring, Delibašić served as an assistant manager with both Partizan and Montenegrin club Budućnost. He had most recently been in charge of FK Mornar in the Montenegrin First League between 2021 and 2023.
It was reported in 2023 that Delibašić had been diagnosed with a brain tumour and undergone surgery.
In a heartfelt statement mourning their former striker, Partizan wrote on their official website: “Andrija, you fought like a lion. You didn’t let the illness break you, stepping into an unfair battle where the opponent was stronger, but you never gave up. You were always a fighter, believing in yourself, your efforts, and the support of your family and friends.
“You showed your strength and won. That first time. Unfortunately, the illness returned, striking harder and more cruelly. This time, you couldn’t overcome it, and we struggle to accept the fact that you are no longer with us. That you will never again walk onto your stadium in Humska. The stadium of your Partizan, where you grew up and played 100 matches, scoring 48 goals.
“Your cheerful spirit, positive energy, and big heart will always be remembered, just like the incredible moments we shared together.
“We will remember the victories, the goals - whether in the Champions League or elsewhere - because for you, there were never big or small matches.
“There were only games in which you gave your all for victory and those in which you watched from the stands, cheering on your teammates as if you were still on the pitch yourself. Andrija, rest in peace. May the angels watch over you.”
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Andrija Delibašić, Txuri Urdin player during the 2007/08 season. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace,” Real Sociedad wrote on social media platform X.
Rayo Vallecano wrote: “Rayo Vallecano is mourning the passing of our former player Andrija Delibasic.
“Deli defended our colors for three seasons (2010-2013), being a protagonist in the promotion to the First Division in 2011.
“We would like to convey our deepest condolences and send our love to his family and friends.”
Hercules wrote: “Hércules CF mourns the passing of Andrija Delibašić, former Blue and White player. He was instrumental in our promotion to the First Division in the 2009/2010 season. He wore the Hercules jersey for two seasons, scoring 20 goals.
“The club would like to send its deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
Real Mallorca wrote: “We deeply regret the loss of Andrija Delibašić, former player of the club. We send our condolences to his family and loved ones.”
