A lot has been made of Damian Vidagany's recent letter to the Aston Villa Fan Advisory Board ahead of the Newcastle fixture. Most are understandably focusing on his closing statement of the Magpies being the 'new PSG.' That line certainly inspires a lot of excitement and helps to bring another level of anticipated excitement for Saturday's match.

The intro paragraph, ahead of the letter, is most intriguing (although the letter is an excellent read by Vidagany, the Villa Director of Football Operations). Speaking to supporters, the AVFC FAB introduced people to the man who penned the piece of correspondence for those who may not know.

While doing so, they also shared what they believe is the best path forward for the club. At this time, there are many, understandably exasperated fans who simply want to see a trophy at this point. Sometimes the path of least resistance can offer that option.

Qualifying for Champions League is still an attainable goal, but falling short there and either playing in Europa League or Conference League would enable the club to more clearly have the chance of grabbing the, at this point, desperately long sought-after reward of wanting to hoist silverware.

Not all competitions are created equally, though. While the cabinet is becoming increasingly more lonely, the intro to the letter makes it known that the ultimate goal is for Villa to be in the 'big six.' With that in mind, they also mentioned the need to move forward and think about the best way to ensure progress.

This can be difficult when the club doesn't have the finished end product to point to to convince supporters that the side is close to being a legitimate annual contender. Fearing the current run of success being something of a one-off is understandable. Those in the operations, however, the staff and players, believe that they are building Villa the right way and that continued positive results will come.

On the verge at Aston Villa

It's an exciting time, and it can also be a potentially scary undertaking to truly believe that Villa are about to enter serious conversations about being one of the better sides in Europe. This is undoubtedly the case. Sustainability and ensuring that, regardless of what happens in PSR undertakings, they are in place to make it possible for AVFC to continually be in conversations among the top clubs.

There is still a gap, but that is shrinking. Iron sharpens iron, and going down a level of competition and not being tested in CL while chasing the FA Cup or Premier League would be a step backward. More importantly, Aston Villa need to continue to build on the current progress. 'Big Six' is far from a dream; it's within reach.
