Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United losing 4-1 at Aston Villa.

The comments from neutrals especially telling…

A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.

The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion the politics (almost!) entirely absent, concentrating instead on matters on the pitch, especially the fact that Newcastle United lost 4-1!!

The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Aston Villa fans and the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:

‘As a Newcastle fan, all I can say is well done Aston Villa. Great performance after what you did midweek. Well deserved.’

‘Yes you were out played today in the end, but do you not think things may have been different if Eddie Howe over his illness and back on duty?’

‘Not really, Howe wouldn’t have been on the pitch. There’s only so much he could do from the sidelines.’

‘A more emphatic result than I expected, Newcastle United are a class act and I guess they just took the brunt of the midweek frustration.

Expect to see Newcastle in the top 5 at the end of the season though.

One of our biggest league games of the season without a doubt. UTV.’

‘Love this, a bit of sportsmanship between clubs where there has been unnecessary needle. Thought Newcastle were tired with the smaller squad and missed Howe. Well done for the cup win.’

‘It’s always good to see a pariah state getting pumped. Well played Aston Villa.’

‘Both teams deserve to play in next seasons Champions League instead of Man City.’

‘(Villa fan) Couldn’t agree more, real clubs proper life long devotee fans.’

‘Let’s not forget how much these teams have been spending. Let’s not try and pretend they’re punching above, they are amongst the top spenders globally on wages and transfers, that’s why they are doing well.’

‘Actually no, neither of these 2 teams are top spenders globally.’

‘Great game and I’d imagine the neutrals would have loved it, too

Newcastle look set for Champions League next season. Hoping we make it, too.’

‘I’m a Liverpool fan and was rooting for arsenal against real Madrid midweek, not all fans are tribal and there’s just as much between mid table teams as there is with the big six it just doesn’t get as much attention. I mean when Newcastle play Sunderland that is up there at the top for tribalness.’

‘Haven’t done your research have you, Newcastle never spent a penny for 3 windows, not sure about Villa, however whinging about money spent, the big six spending with impunity for 30 plus years then decide they don’t like competition’

‘To be fair Newcastle have been flying but just had an off day today. I’m sure you’ll qualify for CL and hope we and Forest can join you.’

‘(Liverpool fan) But remember people are saying that the league has been boring this season.’

‘It’s been boring for some of the so called big six, man united, Tottenham, even Man city and Chelsea haven’t been convincing. As a Villa fan, it’s been exciting and refreshing to see different teams battling at the top of the league.’

‘Newcastle, forest and us would be fabulous for the Champions League. UEFA, Sky, Premier League etc would absolutely hate it without their beloved Chelsea, City etc so let’s keep us ‘underdogs’ praying for the miracle.’

‘What a fantastic performance from Villa, stopped a red hot Newcastle team in their tracks.

Villa have given their chances of a CL place a shot in the arm with this win.’

‘Wow. What a result. Disappointment like mid week can go one of two ways and Villa have reacted perfectly. Obviously want to be back in the big time next season and based on this no reason why not. NUFC have been the team of 2025 so this is seriously impressive. Would love both of you and NF to joint us and LFC in the CL but I worry only 2 of you 3 will make it with MCFC. Fear for NF tbh.’

‘Respect to the Toon Army on here. Fantastic comments!

UTV.’

‘It’s the benefit of having a proper squad of players, rather than just a good starting eleven.’

‘Very magnanimous of Newcastle fans.

TBF you’ve give us a few batterings at your place in recent years, and as was the case two years ago, we were on top form today. Probably our most complete game of the season.’

‘Top performance from the boys today. Sensational from start to finish.

To dominate a class team like Newcastle after playing PSG a few days ago shows how far we’ve come.

What a time to be a villain!!’

‘As usual, Newcastle fans showing true class with their comments on here.

Two clubs who have been dragged through the mire and Fans who have known hard times good to see our clubs doing better. Delighted with our team performance today against a very good side UTV.’
