Trent Alexander-Arnold could return as Reds look to take another huge step towards the title
Liverpool will hope to have Trent Alexander-Arnold back in the squad for Sunday’s trip to Leicester in the Premier League.
The Reds right-back has not played since injuring his ankle in the second half of the agonising penalty shootout defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the Champions League last-16 tie at Anfield on March 11.
Alexander-Arnold has missed all of Liverpool’s last four matches across all competitions, the Carabao Cup final defeat by Newcastle at Wembley as well as the Premier League games against Everton, Fulham and West Ham.
The England international has been stepping up his return of late, resuming training this week. He could be involved against Leicester as a result, though Arne Slot insists there is no possibility for him to start just yet.
“Trent is coming back from an injury, he trained with us yesterday and every time he plays with us and trains with us he shows his commitment,” the Liverpool boss said on Friday.
“He has worked so hard to be back already now, and the moment he is on the pitch he shows me what a great football player he is and how much he is involved in us trying to achieve our goals this season. He has worked so hard during the whole season and now during his rehab to be back with the team again.”
Slot added: “[He is] not [ready] to start but if things go well today and tomorrow, he might – might – be on the bench. But definitely not to start because he is out for five-and-a-half weeks and this is today probably his first session with the team.
“It was Wednesday I think he did parts of the team session. So he’s not able to start but hopefully he can be able to join us because for Conor [Bradley], he has been out for a long time so for him to play 90 isn’t easy as well. So it would be nice if Trent is with us during the weekend, yes.”
Liverpool’s right-back problems have eased of late with Alexander-Arnold’s understudy Bradley making his first start since recovering from a hamstring injury against West Ham last time out, though Joe Gomez remains absent after hamstring surgery.
Striker Darwin Nunez should be back in Slot’s squad this weekend after recovering from the illness that saw him miss the last-gasp 2-1 win over the Hammers at Anfield.
Slot may choose to reinstall Andy Robertson at left-back in place of Kostas Tsimikas, while Dominik Szoboszlai will hope to return further forward after Curtis Jones got the nod against West Ham.
Premier League champions-elect Liverpool will seal the title with five matches to spare if they beat Leicester on Sunday and Arsenal lose away at Ipswich earlier in the afternoon.
Predicted Liverpool XI: Alisson; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz; Jota
Injured: Gomez
Doubt: Alexander-Arnold
