Dean Huijsen has been one of big surprise success stories of this Premier League season.
Signed as a 19 year old last summer by Bournemouth for what looks now a bargain initial £12m (potentially rising to around £15m) from Juventus, it looks for sure now that the Cherries will only enjoy the exciting young defender for this one season.
Dean Huijsen turned 20 earlier this month and looks set to be playing for another club when the 2025/26 season kicks off.
BBC Sport report that four Premier League clubs are big admirers of Dean Huijsen, naming Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle United.
Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen is the subject of genuine interest from Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle heading into the summer transfer window.
Whilst it is still a lot of money for a 20 year old relatively inexperienced player, another enticing factor is that BBC Sport say ‘multiple’ sources have confirmed to them that the young defender has a £50m release clause.
The BBC Sport report also says that Bournemouth have now become increasingly resigned to losing their star defender.
There are a number of factors that BBC Sport say could see Dean Huijsen be interested in Newcastle United as his choice of new club:
‘It is also understood that while regular playing time to ensure his continued development will be a key consideration for Huijsen when he comes to settle on his future, the prospect of Champions League participation will also be a factor.
Newcastle will prioritise a new central defender this summer having missed out on number one target, Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, last year and could attract Huijsen, particularly if they qualify for the Champions League.’
Arsenal have arguably the best central defensive duo in the Premier League and BBC Sport say that makes it difficult to see them as serious contenders, whilst if Newcastle United do get Champions League football then that would be a significant factor in NUFC’s favour. Especially if Chelsea don’t.
Dean Huijsen has already been capped at senior level by Spain this season, yet another bit of recognition as to his excellent progress in the Premier League.
Newcastle United have repeatedly shown that they intend to spend their big money on young players with their best years in front of them, who can improve further on the pitch and in terms of valuation off it.
It was widely reported last summer that Newcastle United had been prepared to pay far more than £50m for Marc Guehi and turning 25 this summer, he is five years older than Dean Huijsen.
We also know that for sure this summer that a new first team contender for the right centre-back position will be a massive priority at NUFC. Fabian Schar turns 34 later this year and agreed an extension recently to end of June 2026. Other than that there is Jamaal Lascelles who is still to return after a significant injury, he turns 32 in November and also has just one more year on his contract.
Whether clubs on the continent will also come in for Dean Huijsen is an unknown. However, after having had just one season in the Premier League, it would surely be a major surprise if the 20 year old stepped down from the highest level, to a lesser league on the continent.
We know that Newcastle United will at last be able to spend big again, after taking the medicine of three transfer windows without bringing in a new face to compete for a first team place.
So maybe the stars are aligning, whereby Dean Huijsen could end up at St James’ Park.
If so, I think he would be a cracking signing, he certainly impressed against Newcastle United this season and is the kind of ball playing central defender that would suit Eddie Howe.
