Real Madrid right-back and captain Dani Carvajal represented the club at the prestigious Laureus Awards ceremony, where Los Blancos were named the Best Team of 2024.

Alongside veteran midfielder Luka Modric, Carvajal accepted the award and used the moment to speak candidly about the club’s situation following their painful elimination from the UEFA Champions League.

While it was a proud moment for Real Madrid to be recognised on the global stage, Carvajal acknowledged the disappointment that still lingers after the Champions League quarter-final defeat.

Speaking to the media, he emphasised the importance of showing character and determination in the remaining matches of the season.

Time to stand up and show the strength

Carvajal did not hide the emotional impact that the Champions League exit has had on the squad. He called on his teammates to recover quickly and focus on the remaining challenges that lie ahead.

“Our moment now has to be to get up,” Carvajal said as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

“When there’s a tough blow like the Champions League exit, the only way forward is to rise again.

“We still have the Club World Cup, La Liga, and the Copa del Rey to fight for. It’s time to take a step forward, hold our heads high, and show the strength behind this badge,” he added.

Madrid’s title hopes hang in the balance

Despite the recognition at the Laureus Awards, the season is far from over for Real Madrid, and the pressure is building.

The club is currently trailing behind Barcelona in La Liga, and the Copa del Rey final sees them face the in-form Blaugrana, who have shown strong momentum in recent weeks. Then there is the extended FIFA Club World Cup.

Following the elimination from the Champions League, fans are watching closely to see whether Carlo Ancelotti’s side can avoid ending the season empty-handed.

For a club of Real Madrid’s stature, failing to win a single trophy would be seen as a massive disappointment, and possibly even trigger major changes within the squad and coaching staff.
