West Ham have confirmed that Crysencio Summerville will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury.
The 23-year-old has endured an injury-hit first campaign with the Hammers, having been restricted to just 19 Premier League games, of which only seven were starts.
Summerville suffered the hamstring injury during manager Graham Potter’s first game in charge, the FA Cup third-round match against Aston Villa in January in which West Ham were beaten 2-1 at Villa Park.
The winger, who joined for £25million from Leeds last summer, will continue his rehabilitation at West Ham’s Rush Green training ground and is “targeting a return for next season”, Richard Collinge, West Ham’s performance director, said in a statement.
West Ham have endured a difficult season and sit 17th in the table, above only the three relegated clubs, with the appointment of Potter failing to bring the expected improvement.
Potter has won just three matches since arriving in early January, and next faces fellow strugglers Tottenham in a home derby on Saturday.
Matches against Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Ipswich will see out a deeply underwhelming season.
