Why Chelsea insider thinks Blues should “sign a Marc Guehi over a Dean Huijsen”

Matt Law dropped an in depth look at Chelsea’s interest in Dean Huijsen yesterday for the Daily Telegraph, with plenty of insight on the progression of the deal and on why Enzo Maresca and the club want to make it happen.

We had a look at that in our piece here, but what was perhaps even more interested was his appearance on the London is Blue podcast yesterday, where he got to actually give some of his own opinions on what Chelsea should do, as someone who has watched them week in, week out for many years.

“I think there’s a very good chance of that [transfer] happening,” Law said on the show.

“He’s what Maresca wants, he’s a ball playing centre-half, he can either play with Fofana or play when Fofana is injured and [then] Chelsea don’t lose what they usually lose when Fofana is out. I get it. But for me, you want a slightly different profile, even if the talent and the ceiling of talent might be a bit different. And I would prefer to see them sign a Marc Guehi over a Dean Huijsen.”

Top talent may not be exactly what Chelsea need now

It’s a really interesting take, and one we agree with. While Huijsen looks an incredible talent, he’s 19 and very much in the ball playing defender role. Isn’t it possible that someone like Guehi, who maybe doesn’t have the same top tier elite talent on the ball, but offers more in terms of experience and leadership, could bring more to a Chelsea group which has plenty of technical skill already, and looks to lack what Guehi can provide more than what Huijsen can provide?

Huijsen seems a more natural replacement for Colwill than Fofana, in that way.
