This team has improved a lot since Natalia Arroyo took over. Early on while in charge, Aston Villa Women have seen a couple of results not go their way, despite having earned at least a point. On Sunday, against Tottenham, they found a way to secure their third goal.
Grabbing the 3-2 win and doing so while having the majority of clear chances and looking more dangerous in the opposition's final third was a fully deserved result. For AVWFC to have a complete game and find a way to produce this final reward is a highly encouraging sign.
As mentioned, earlier versions of this squad would probably have found a way to keep it at a draw or even concede one more. Instead, as visitors, they outperformed Spurs and willed themselves to victory. There are still enough matches where not everything is secure in terms of dropping down. Sitting here on the Monday after their latest WSL game, however, Arroyo's side is looking in excellent shape.
A lot of this has come through Kirsty Hanson's play. Coming off the bench, she's scored two goals as a substitute in consecutive matches that proved to be the difference for Villa. There are only three fixtures remaining. In an odd sort of way, however, AVWFC are finding the best time to start playing their best and see their chances go on.
Against Liverpool, remember, after the initial Hanson goal, it was an own goal that was created by Ebony Salmon causing issues down the right-hand side that provided the second score for Villa. Moments like that can often help to spark and fuel a renewed confidence and belief in a team.
Just finding a way to flip a tie to three points can do a lot to boost any side. While speaking with Villa TV, Hanson spoke on how the AVWFC have managed to navigate this season. She explained:
"We obviously wanted to do that earlier on in the season, but our aim is to finish off strong now. So hopefully we can keep doing that, take each game as it comes."
On a week-to-week basis, a lot can change. The beginning stages did not go according to plan. Focusing on the positives, however, Villa have shown growth and look like they truly are building something, as Hanson suggested.
