Man Utd team news vs Bournemouth

Ruben Amorim has the biggest game of Man Utd’s season to prepare for ahead of their Europa League semi-final clash against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday night, and he will likely have to rest a handful of his first-team stars.

The former Sporting CP boss previously admitted he was willing to “experiment with kids” for the rest of the season and you can expect that to continue against the Cherries.

Man Utd are on a run of three defeats from five in the league but Amorim still played an experimental side for their last game, a 0-1 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford last week. The likes of Tyler Fredricson should get more opportunities to impress at the back alongside centre-backs Noussair Mazraoui and Victor Lindelof.

Amorim has something of a dilemma in midfield with not many options fit and ready, but Christian Eriksen should definitely start. He might want to keep Kobbie Mainoo fit for the first leg clash this week and rest him, while putting Casemiro alongside the Danish star. That would mean Manuel Ugarte and Mainoo are fresh to start against Bilbao.

Harry Amass should get another starting spot at left wing-back with Patrick Dortgu at right wing-back. Up front, there could be a chance for Mason Mount to finally get a start since his return from injury alongside Alejandro Garnacho. And if Amorim is brave enough he may decide to start 17-year-old striker Chido-Obi Martin to ensure Rasmus Hojlund is ready for the mid-week clash.

The Red Devils remain without Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee for the rest of the campaign, and while there is a chance Amad Diallo could feature before the end of the season, it looks remote – and certainly won’t come before next month.

Centre-backs Ayden Heaven and Matthijs de Ligt are also battling to make it back before the end of the campaign. They won’t be fit for Bournemouth or the first leg on Thursday, but there is a chance they could feature in the second leg in Spain the following week.

Tobias Collyer, meanwhile, may be kept out of this one, with Thursday’s night game eyed a possible return date. Elsewhere, Amorim will be looking to manage his players’ minutes where possible, so we could see a handful of early changes to ensure everyone is fit for Thursday’s game.

Goal-shy Man Utd

Man Utd might have scored five against Lyon in their dramatic Europa League quarter-final second leg victory over Lyon last Thursday, but in the Premier League they can hardly buy a goal.

In Man Utd’s last four league matches, they have managed one goal – which came in the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United on 13th April. The Red Devils have drawn a blank in the other three during a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, a 0-0 home draw against Manchester City and a 1-0 home loss to Wolves last week.

Man Utd’s case has not been helped by some abject performances from their main two goalscoring hopes this season. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have netted just six goals between them in the Premier League despite costing a combined £107million and now the latter has been ruled out for the campaign.

Amorim will be hoping to see a much more energetic and clinical display from his side against the Cherries in the hopes of inspiring the squad for their momentous clash against Bilbao. Giving a chance to teenager Chido-Obi could be the perfect way for Amorim to inject some much-needed firepower up front.
