The Gas have been relegated to League Two after a hugely disappointing campaign.

Inigo Calderon has revealed that he wants to stay on as Britsol Rovers head coach for next season, following the club's relegation to League Two.

Burton Albion's draw against Wigan Athletic on Tuesday condemned the Gas to the fate that they have been trying to close their eyes to for a long time. Next season they will be playing their football in League Two.

Rovers' third and final season of their stint in the English third tier has been way below standard. The two prior campaigns saw them finish in the lower mid-table region, but for the last season-and-a-half the situation has slowly got worse and worse until they hit the bottom of the barrel on Tuesday.

They have lost eight of their last nine games and have only won a total of four times since the start of February. Form like that is certainly relegation-worthy, and that's the way it has mostly been since Calderon took office on Boxing Day.

Inigo Calderon wants to stay as Bristol Rovers' head coach

Despite the former Brighton & Hove Albion defender's horrendous first experience of life as a head coach, the Spaniard has said he is determined to finish what he has started and try to right the wrongs of relegation next season.

Calderon, who took over a Rovers side who were 19th in League One and three points clear of safety, still has two years left on the deal that he signed at Christmas.

"I would like to stay here, especially because I think the business hasn't been done for me, obviously," he told BBC Radio Bristol.

"I feel a big part of the relegation, big time, but it's true that it's not up to me. I have to have a conversation with the board. It's not an easy one for them either. They have to make a great decision because next year is going to be massive."

It's hard to see how Inigo Calderon keeps his job at The Memorial Stadium following relegation

Calderon hadn't taken the Gas from a decent position towards going down. Things were bad when he came in. The problem is that he hasn't been able to find solutions to the issues, and this latest run of form is a real indictment on him as a head coach.

Given his inability to get results when Rovers absolutely needed to in League One, how much faith will the supporters and the club's board have in him to put together a team that can challenge for promotion next season in League Two?

He had a full winter transfer window, although they are notoriously tougher to work in than summer ones, but few improvements were made. You can certainly see why questions are being raised.
