According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, it has come to light that Bayer Leverkusen have no intention of standing in the way if Xabi Alonso decides to move to Real Madrid this summer.

The Spaniard is widely regarded as the top candidate to replace Carlo Ancelotti, whose future at the Santiago Bernabeu is under serious doubt following Real Madrid’s disappointing Champions League exit.

Although no formal approach has been made yet, it has been clear for months that Alonso is Real Madrid’s priority in the event of a coaching change.

What adds fuel to the fire is that Alonso reportedly turned down offers from the Premier League and Bayern Munich last year in order to continue at Leverkusen, aware that a return to Madrid could materialise.

Now, with Ancelotti’s tenure under heavy scrutiny, the timing seems perfect for Alonso to take the next step.

Everything points to Alonso

Leverkusen have made their stance clear: they respect Alonso’s ambitions and will not prevent him from accepting a role as significant as the Real Madrid job.

However, they have also inserted a release clause between €15-20 million into his contract, which would need to be triggered unless an agreement can be negotiated.

Real Madrid, of course, will try to reduce that fee if possible, but are prepared to act swiftly once a final decision on Ancelotti is made.

Importantly, Alonso is not pushing for anything just yet. He is fully focused on finishing the season with Leverkusen and will only consider any approach once the situation with Ancelotti is clarified.

For now, the Italian manager remains in charge, with a meeting scheduled after the Copa del Rey final to discuss his future.

All signs point toward a potential transition at Madrid this summer and with Alonso already seen as the natural heir, Real Madrid might be edging closer to ushering in a new era under one of their own.
