Glen Johnson has suggested Chelsea would be right to avoid signing Jadon Sancho on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

The 24-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer on loan from Manchester United, but with an obligation to make that a permanent move for £25m.

However, Sancho has had a limited impact for Enzo Maresca’s side this season, managing two goals and four assists in 24 appearances across all competitions.

It has led to discussions at Chelsea over getting out of their obligation to sign him this summer, according to The i.

Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Geovany Quenda from Sporting Lisbon, with the teenager expected to arrive at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2026.

The Blues could therefore look to avoid taking on Sancho’s £250,000-a-week wages in a permanent deal, though it is claimed they would have to pay a penalty fee to United to avoid their obligation.

United are not believed to want Sancho back and are keen to sell, but former Chelsea defender Johnson does not think the Blue should go through with the deal.

“Jadon Sancho started well at Chelsea, but the problem with him is that he’s too inconsistent,” he told Betano.

“On his day when he’s up for it, he can look like a world beater, but it just isn’t happening often enough to justify the transfer for Chelsea at the moment.

“If Chelsea have the opportunity to go back to Manchester United at the end of the season and not pay the transfer fee for the deal, they may see that as a better outcome for them from a financial standpoint.

“I could see why they’d be looking to do that – the levels we’re seeing with Sancho at the moment are similar to what we’ve seen from him at other clubs for a while now, really.”
