It is safe to say that the biggest story coming out of the weekend in Scottish football was Celtic's second consecutive defeat at the hands of the Rangers. That has been a rare sight in recent years. Their last win at Parkhead had come back in October of 2020. Coming into 2025, Brendan Rodgers had lost just one Glasgow Derby.
But then, football is a funny sport. The fact that this has happened in a season when the Rangers have struggled throughout the campaign and look set to finish without a trophy is proof of that.
Judging from the reactions to the result at the weekend, the Rangers fans and players were delighted with the victory. Of course, it came just days after they booked their place in the last 8 of the Europa League by winning against Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce side on penalties.
But there are things that the Rangers will be worried about as well. One of them will be the behaviour of a section of their support in these recent games.
As reported by The Scotsman, a statement from the Rangers read:
"Everyone associated with Rangers Football Club will undoubtedly have enjoyed the last fortnight, with the men’s first-team producing some memorable results at home and abroad."Contributing enormously to these occasions has been the backing of the Rangers supporters, with the world once again taking note of the phenomenal passion the club’s fans bring to these big occasions."It is, however, deeply saddening and frankly embarrassing that the club is now set to face significant sanctions for the actions of a very small minority."
Particularly pointing out their actions at Celtic Park at the weekend, it goes on to state:
"Lastly, and despite clear warnings to the contrary, pyrotechnics were used by two individuals following Sunday’s Old Firm victory at Parkhead."This runs the risk of an additional 800 of our supporters being unable to attend a match in the latter stages of the Premier Sports Cup at Hampden, in addition to the 500 that will already miss out as a result of the use of pyrotechnics."All of the above behaviours will have consequences for the club, and either directly or indirectly, the club’s supporters."
Of course, it remains to be seen what action is taken regarding these incidents. At the same time, one cannot overlook the actions of some of their players during and after the match at Celtic Park.
Vaclav Cerny has found his name in the headlines after it appeared that he sprayed water from his bottle at Celtic fans while celebrating the Rangers' late winner at Parkhead. It has been suggested that he could face a ban due to the incident.
On the other hand, Dujon Sterling social media post regarding Celtic Park has gone viral as well. The SFA might take a look at his actions as well.
