Southampton targetman races against time to convince loan club for summer move

It hasn't been going brilliant for Southampton loanee Adam Armstrong lately. Despite a brilliant West Brom debut, the forward now faces uncertainty over permanent move aspirations.

At this point, I can't be the only one noticing this. Noted a common fate among Southampton forwards? Well, they all struggle miserably, entangled both in on and off-the-field issues.

Now, certainly, it isn't that shocking given the club's fate, but still, this unlucky resemblance feels more than a coincidence.

Remember prodigy forward Tyler Dibling's national demotion or Paul Onuachu's contractual issues? And not to forget the left-out situation of Ryan Fraser.

But while till now, it was limited to Southampton's current roster players, now it has been transmitted to loaned-out stars as well.

Take Adam Armstrong, for example. He made a dream restart in the Championship with a debut goal but has struggled to replicate that form often.

It's been over a month and a half, yet Armstrong has struggled to live up to West Brom’s expectations. With just two goals in eight appearances, he's falling well short of the second-division reputation that convinced the Albion to take a chance on him in winter.

Adam Armstrong must improve his scoring for a summer switch

Well, it comes naturally to where this is heading. An unconvinced West Brom side may be unlikely to trust Adam Armstrong beyond the ongoing loan spell.

Simply put, the forward's inconsistent scoring run lately has grown clouds over his permanent switch to Tony Mowbray's West Bromwich side.

And now, with just eight games left this season, Armstrong is running out of time to convince his current employers. If his form doesn’t improve, he won’t just be missing out on a move, his parent club, Southampton, suffers too.

After all, the Saints were hoping to cash in on him this summer, and a failed short-term move could drastically lower his market value.

So, make no mistake, this is more than just a slump. Armstrong is in a race against time, one he simply cannot afford to lose if he wants to avoid further damaging his already uncertain future at St. Mary's.
