Tommaso Augello is a rare example of a footballer who has climbed his way up to the top of the calcio ladder from the bottom rung.
Born in Milan, the defender started out with amateur side Pontisola, then took successive steps up to Giana Erminio in Serie C and Spezia in Serie B before finally realising his childhood dream of playing in Serie A when he joined Sampdoria in 2019.
“I wasn’t obsessed by the idea,” the 26-year-old revealed, speaking in an exclusive interview after signing a new deal to keep him at the club until 2025.
“My family always told me that school came first and although football is a priority for me now finishing my degree in Social Sciences is one of my objectives.
“I’d like to earn an Italy call-up too but again it’s not something I obsess over. If I deserve it, I’ll get the call. If not, I’ll just focus on doing well for Sampdoria. I really hope we can challenge for something important.”
