Don Goodman thinks Bradford City will secure automatic promotion.
Bradford City have seen their bid for automatic promotion to League One falter a little in recent weeks.
A run of just one win in their last six league games has left the Bantams with work still to do, with just two games remaining in the season.
Graham Alexander’s side now sit third in the League Two table, just one point ahead of their nearest challengers, Walsall. They also face a difficult away trip to take on table-topping Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.
Despite being in a strong position a few weeks ago, Bradford will surely be looking over their shoulder nervously at the minute, especially with yet another crucial ‘six pointer’ to come at the weekend.
League Two has been typically unpredictable this season, with several teams missing chances to pull away from the chasing pack and stake a serious claim for one of the three automatic promotion spots.
Bradford threatened to break clear themselves, when they went on a run of just one defeat in 15 games between the end of December and the start of March. However, that now feels like a distant memory, such is their stuttering form of late.
Since that run, the West Yorkshire outfit have won just two of their last nine games, hardly what would typically be described as promotion-winning form.
With the League Two season finally at crunch time, we asked EFL pundit Don Goodman whether he believes Bradford will get themselves over the line and secure promotion.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman said: “I think the fortunate thing for Bradford City is that Walsall have fallen off a cliff. It’s 12 games without a win for Walsall now.
“In my mind, it feels like Bradford only need to win one of their last two games. Obviously, an away game at Doncaster is as tough a game as there is in that league, so what they will obviously try and do is go there and, at the very worst, avoid defeat.
“Then they’ve got a game against Fleetwood at home and you’d have to back them to win that game. I think if they can win that, then the automatic promotion prize would be theirs.
“The pressure is on though, there’s no doubt about it.”
As Goodman alluded to, Walsall’s drop-off since the turn of the year has left the door ajar for Bradford and the rest of the teams towards the top end of the table.
Mat Sadler’s side had built up an incredible 13-point lead at the top of the fourth tier by early January, but their form has badly tailed off since Stoke City’s decision to recall striker Nathan Lowe in the New Year.
The Saddlers are now 12 games without a win and missed a huge opportunity to heap even more pressure on Bradford on Saturday afternoon.
Oisin McEntee had a goal disallowed in stoppage-time for handling the ball, when he seemingly could have just headed it in. As a result, Walsall were held to a 0-0 draw by Newport County.
Had they taken all three points at Rodney Parade it would have lifted them above Bradford, who could ultimately only draw at Chesterfield later in the day.
Unless there is a remarkable turnaround from either Wimbledon or Notts County, the Bantams look set to be in a four-way battle for promotion.
They currently have a one-point advantage over fourth-placed Walsall, but with Accrington and a Crewe side who could have nothing to play for still to face, the Saddlers’ fixtures are certainly favourable.
For Bradford, anything they can take away from Doncaster next weekend would be a massive bonus, while the home clash with Fleetwood Town on the final day looks set to be a game that they simply must win.
