Everton are preparing for a massive summer transfer window under the new ownership, with several players fighting for their futures.

As many as 13 players could leave the club (including loan signings) in the summer due to their contract situations. The Toffees have decided not to make any hasty decisions at the moment until they secure Premier League safety.

The midfield is one area that needs rebuilding. Abdoulaye Doucoure and Idrissa Gueye are likely to depart if their contracts are not extended, and Orel Mangala will return to his parent club, Lyon.

A new transfer committee structure is set to be in place, and all eyes will be on Everton’s recruitment procedure, where David Moyes is expected to play a big part.

Put simply, Everton need to sign more than one central midfielder in the summer. According to journalist Alex Crook, the Toffees are eyeing a summer move for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff.

The 27-year-old is open to the idea of leaving St James’ Park in the summer. David Moyes is thought to be a keen admirer of the Magpies midfielder.

Here’s why Sean Longstaff will be a smart addition for Everton

Experience – The defensive midfielder has made 167 Premier League appearances for the Magpies, and he will go straight into Moyes’s team. He has struggled for regular games under Eddie Howe this season and could be tempted to play under Moyes at Everton.

Bargain – Longstaff will have a year left on his contract in the summer, and Newcastle would be ready to offload him as they need to maintain their PSR balance. He has come through the academy, and selling the hometown hero would represent 100 per cent profit under PSR rules. From Everton’s point of view, they can get him at a bargain price due to his contract situation.

Energy in midfield – Capable of playing both as a holding midfielder and a traditional defensive midfielder, Longstaff has a few good years left in him before age creeps in. He has the odd habit of scoring goals from midfield as well, having managed 16 goals in all competitions for the Magpies.
