AC Milan are approaching a crossroads regarding the futures of Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez, whose deals are set to expire in just over 12 months.
As Quotidiano Sportivo report this morning, uncertainty is one of the few certainties of Milan today. From the offices of Casa Milan to the field, it feels like there are few pillars to build around after a dreadful 2024-25 season so far.
In these uncertain cases, clubs traditionally cling to certainties, such as the captain and his assistant: Maignan and Theo. Yet, the two Frenchmen have fluctuated in performance levels and also have contracts expiring in June 2026.
Therefore, they also count as uncertainties, albeit with the necessary distinctions. For the goalkeeper, a verbal agreement seems to have been there for some time to extend until 2029 and raise the salary, bringing it to €5m net per year.
The announcement, however, has not arrived. The 29-year-old’s performances have recently returned to ‘Magic Mike’ levels and he is getting closer to the final green light. He spoke to Sky after the Fiorentina draw and was asked about his renewal.
“I feel good at Milan, I give everything for this shirt every day. Then, at this moment, to tell the truth, I don’t know if… Actually, I know. But I don’t want to talk about my contract right now,” he said. If he were to depart, Chelsea and Aston Villa have reportedly asked for information.
For Theo the situation is a bit more thorny. The request to double the current €4m net salary was denied, while his agent Manuel Garcia Quilòn was at Casa Milan in December and had confirmed his client’s desire to stay.
The player’s struggles on the field have not pushed the club in this direction. Indeed, the 27-year-old has been on his way out for some time. As Geoffrey Moncada said: “We can’t afford to lose players for free.
The summer is coming and without an extension he will be sold to the highest bidder. Even more so without European competitions. Last year, Bayern Munich were keen but the asking price was nearly nine figures. In a few months, it will be a completely different story.
