At this point, it is no secret that Barcelona are looking for a new defensive midfielder to add to their ranks as concerns grow over the performance levels of captain Sergio Busquets.
The veteran midfielder has struggled in the last two matches against Inter Milan and Real Madrid. While the plan was to bring in a replacement at the end of the season when his contract expires, recent results have forced the club to look for an option in January itself.
Many players have been linked with Barça as a potential alternative for Busquets in the position. And another name now being added to the list of possible targets is that of Valencia mainstay Hugo Guillamon.
Indeed, as per Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have been keeping tabs on Guillamon and have so far received good reports on the midfielder.
The 22-year-old started out as a central defender for Los Che and had made an impression with his ability to distribute the ball accurately from the back. Last season saw former manager Jose Bordalas install him as a defensive midfielder and the youngster shone in the role.
Current manager Gennaro Gattuso has stuck with Guillamon in the No. 6 position this term and the 22-year-old has continued to perform admirably. So far in nine La Liga matches, he has chipped in with three assists.
A skilled passer of the ball, Guillamon has also impressed with his ability to win back possession in the middle of the park without going into rash challenges. His qualities have earned him three caps for the Spanish national team as well.
And Barcelona too have good reports on the 22-year-old centre-back turned defensive midfielder. However, signing him in January will certainly not be easy as he is a permanent fixture for Valencia, who would be reluctant to let their budding star leave.
Furthermore, Guillamon has a contract with Los Che that runs until the summer of 2026 and has a €50 million release clause embedded in it. So, a move in January could be tricky to pull off for Barça.
